What is an "Old European Cut" diamond?

When I was a student at the GIA we were taught about all of the different diamond cuts, and the Old European Cut was one of the more interesting. This diamond shape is known for its round outline, high crown, open culet and wavy girdle. This diamond shape came about after the invention of the motor which allowed diamond to be spun at a high speed while another diamond was held gently next to it. Over several days the spinning diamond would become round. This is a similar idea to holding a chisel next to a piece of wood that is spinning on a lathe.

In the 1890’s experiments in making this newly designed diamond which would be round instead of squarish, weigh less and sparkle more caused uproar in the diamond industry. Even back then diamonds were sold by weight. Eventually this newer cut was called the “Old European Cut.” This cutting style was popular from about 1890 to 1920.
